Choc Dipped Pretzels

Choc Dipped Pretzels
25 students
I purchased these bags (400gm) of pretzels from the Reject Shop, only to find they were tiny.

So we allowed 8 per student.
One bag is enough for 30 students (I bought 3 bags and we didn’t even use one). If you find other larger ones just adjust the quantities.

I melted 600gm of chocolate and had 100’s and 1000’s to dip them in.
I took the shelves out of the fridge, lined them with baking paper and put the dipped pretzels straight on the shelves and into the fridge, so they would set quickly, and we don’t have enough tray that are the right size to fit in the fridge. Also they are already cold so it helps the setting process.

Kids in the Kitchen 30/05/14

This week was especially delicious. First a huge thanks to Sarah (Ollie's Mum) and Amanda (Alivia's Mum) for joining us and helping out. The kids love it when their parents or guardians come along.
We made Chicken Bites, bought some hot chips ($20 was a perfect amount for 25 students) and I we had some carrot and celery, which the students had to have at least one piece of either with their lunch. Then we made the Choc Dipped Pretzels. I made some in advance as I am always cautious of running out of time.

Can't wait for the new garden

The grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 planted some dwarf bean seeds in the remaining old garden bed as part of their biological studies. The were very enthusiastic and are checking their seedlings daily. Luckily we have had some rain, but they are very attentive in making sure they were watered when it it doesn't rain. We will have a bumper crop of peas in a few weeks. I thought dwarf peas would be more manageable at this point, rather than having to build something too tall for beans or peas to grow up, which we will be able to do in the new garden beds.

I added 10 bags of potting mix and some Dynamic Lifter to the soil in the week prior to the seed planting. We used plastic knives and a permanent texta to label the plots.

Progress in the shed

Here are some photo's of our progress so far.

This is the start of my rubbish collection in one end of the shed

The other end of the shed

Started emptying the shed and filling the skip

Now we are getting somewhere, temporarily moved some things into the sports shed and continued with the rubbish, 2 trailer loads

Where we are at now, just waiting for some lucky person to win the wood raffle, and then the shed will be ready for a good pressure clean and then fitout.

Creamy Cheesy Bacon Pasta Recipe

Creamy Cheesy Bacon Pasta
20 students, quantities to confirm
1kg bacon cut up
2 onions diced
2 cloves garlic minced

Fry all together until onion is cooked and bacon begins to get crispy

Cheesy Sauce
150g butter
6 tablespoons plain flour
6 cups milk
3 cup grated cheddar cheese

1. Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat for 2 minutes or until melted and foaming. Add flour. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 1 minute or until mixture bubbles. Remove pan from heat. Slowly add milk, 1/4 cup at a time, stirring constantly to prevent lumps forming.

2. Return pan to medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until sauce boils and thickens. Stir in cheese until smooth. Remove pan from heat.

Pasta
1kg cooked, penne or similar
(27 lunches I made 1.5kg of pasta)

Mix bacon mixture, cheesy sauce and pasta together. Serve with a sprinkle of grated cheese on top.

Kids in the Kitchen 23/5/14

Creamy Bacon and Cheese Pasta and Apple Pies YUM.
Today's group had a great time rolling out the pastry for our apple pies, filling them and topping with a crisscross. In the future I hope to use apples from the school's apple tree, but for now we had to use canned.  I had prepared the pasta sauce earlier, as time is limited.
27 lunch orders this week, it's great to see so many kids enjoying the lunches. Thanks to Kylie for helping out.

Progress in the Garden

I was very happy today when I came into school and the plumber had been and done the work in the garden. We have a level area and tap,we can now move on to the next stage.
We are going to plan the exact layout of the new garden beds, spray all the weeds and grass, lay the watering system for all the garden and then get the garden beds built.
After a short delay, the project is now moving forward again. I can't wait.

I have also been busy cleaning out the shed. Thank you to those who have helped in removing things that didn't belong. I can't wait to get a skip and start throwing stuff out.

Kids in the Kitchen Week 1 Term 2

Here are some photo's from week one term two. The students chose to make Spaghetti and Meatballs and Ice Cream Sundaes.
I prepared the meatball mixture the same as the hamburger recipe, as the kids seemed to like it. We kept the sauce separate, just in case there were some kids that didn't want it, i think there were 2.
We had some left over hamburger buns in the freezer so I decided to make some cheesy garlic bread, which I just put cheese and a sprinkle of garlic salt.
The Ice Cream Sundaes were a hit. I had 3 toppings, mini marshmallows, 100's and 1000's, wafer biscuits and a can of cream, so the kids got their ice cream and then chose the toppings they wanted. It got a bit messy, but the kids loved it.
The recipe made heaps of meatball. I allowed 4 for each student which was a good amount with some extras. There were 27 kids having lunch, which is a lot, so I added 500gm extra meat, there would have been enough for 20 with out it. I cooked 3 packets of spaghetti, which was a perfect amount for 27 serves.

Easter Craft Extravaganza

The School held it's first Craft Expo on Easter Sunday. Although the turn out wasn't quite as good as expected, it was a great event and will definitely be run again.

SEEDS project donated kilo's of play dough, which the kids loved playing with. The left over was donated to the school for use in the classroom.
